Royal Enclosure Dress Code 2026 Full Rules

The Royal Enclosure has the most detailed and strictly enforced dress code of any enclosure at Royal Ascot. The rules are reviewed and updated each year. Here is the complete requirement for 2026.

Men Royal Enclosure

Morning dress is mandatory.

This means a morning coat (black or grey), matching or complementary waistcoat, and matching trousers. There are no acceptable substitutions for the morning coat in the Royal Enclosure.

Top hat required.

A top hat in black or grey must be worn at all times within the enclosure. Removing it for photographs is acceptable but it should otherwise remain on.

Collared shirt and tie.

A collared shirt with a tie or cravat is required. Cravats are acceptable and have become increasingly popular as an alternative to a traditional tie.

No novelty or coloured top hats.

Top hats must be black or grey. Coloured, patterned, or novelty top hats are not permitted.

Women Royal Enclosure

Hats are mandatory, not optional.

A hat or headpiece must be worn at all times. It must have a solid base of at least four inches (10cm) in diameter. Fascinators without a solid base do not meet this requirement and will result in being turned away.

No strapless or off-the-shoulder dresses.

Dresses and tops must have straps of at least one inch wide. Strapless, halter-neck, and off-the-shoulder styles are not permitted.

Skirt length.

Skirts, dresses, and divided skirts must fall to the knee or below.

Trouser suits.

Trouser suits are permitted but the trouser and jacket must be of the same colour and material. A matching hat or headpiece is still required.

Midriff must be covered.

Any outfit that exposes the midriff is not permitted in the Royal Enclosure.

Queen Anne Enclosure Dress Code 2026

The Queen Anne Enclosure has a smart formal dress code that is less prescriptive than the Royal Enclosure but still clearly enforced. Morning dress is welcomed but not required. For men, a well-cut lounge suit with a collared shirt and tie is the standard. For women, a smart formal dress or skirt suit with a hat or fascinator is expected. The four-inch hat rule does not apply here, so fascinators are acceptable.

Village Enclosure Dress Code 2026

Village Enclosure Dress Code 2026

The Village Enclosure operates a smart dress code. For men, a suit or smart tailored separates are appropriate. For women, a smart dress or smart separates are expected. Hats and fascinators are encouraged but not compulsory. Jeans, trainers, and sportswear are not permitted in any enclosure at Royal Ascot.

Windsor Enclosure Dress Code 2026

The Windsor Enclosure has the most relaxed dress code at Royal Ascot. Smart casual is the standard, and there is no requirement for hats or formal dress. However, the usual Royal Ascot restrictions still apply — no jeans, no sportswear, no flip flops. It is worth noting that smart casual at a British racecourse still implies a level of presentation that goes beyond everyday casual clothing.

The Most Common Dress Code Mistakes
And How to Avoid Them

Fascinator without a solid base in the Royal Enclosure.

This is by far the most common reason women are turned away at the entrance. If you are attending the Royal Enclosure, your hat or headpiece must have a solid base of at least four inches. A small clip-on fascinator will not pass.

Mismatched morning dress for men.

The morning coat, waistcoat, and trousers should be coordinated. Wearing a grey morning coat with black trousers, or a random waistcoat that clashes significantly, is frowned upon in the Royal Enclosure.

Strapless dresses.

Despite being popular in summer, strapless dresses are explicitly prohibited in the Royal Enclosure. Check your outfit before travelling.

Assuming the rules have relaxed.

Royal Ascot dress code is enforced at the entrance every year. Checking the official Ascot website before your visit for the most current rules is always worthwhile.

Arriving in Your Outfit Why Transport Matters

Arriving in Your Outfit Why Transport Matters

One practical consideration that is often overlooked is how you actually get to Royal Ascot in your race day outfit. Arriving at London Waterloo station in morning dress or a formal hat to board a crowded train is a very different experience to being collected from your front door in a premium vehicle.

For those who have invested in their outfit for the day, a private chauffeur transfer keeps the experience consistent from start to finish. Our luxury chauffeur service London collects you from your door in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or executive saloon, delivers you to the Ascot Racecourse entrance, and waits for your return hat intact and outfit unbothered by the journey.
